“I hope you will go out and let stories, that is life, happen to you, and that you will work with these stories... water them with your blood and tears and your laughter till they bloom, till you yourself burst into bloom.”

- Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estés

CREATE-YOUR-OWN TRIPTYCH

In classical art, a triptych refers to a single picture made up of three parts. Traditionally, this was a center panel with two wings or shutters, which could be moved to protect or reveal the interior image. Most triptychs until the early 19th century were religious icons, when the form was redefined as a way to paint secular subjects and imply a religious or holy air. The “triptych of girlhood” that Clare Barron creates in Dance Nation is similarly sacred. By placing solitary moments in conversation with each other, Barron highlights the irony of growing up - how can one feel so alone in an experience that so many others have had?

For this activity, we are asking you to create your own triptych. Gather or create three images that tell your story of the play and arrange them in an order. Some things to remember:

  • A triptych gains its power through the story it tells. How do your three images inform the others?

  • There does not need to be a beginning, middle, and end. In fact, what happens if you switch your order around completely?

  • This is your personal story of the play - it is okay if it does not make sense to everyone else!

Email us your triptych to dancenationdramaturgy@gmail.com.
